A Spiritual Metamorphosis

Daily Bible Thought for December 1, 2025 from Romans 12:2

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

The Basic Bible Thought:

"We are commanded here not to look like or fashion ourselves according to the culture of the world. Instead, we should have our minds renewed by God's Word so that we can know, understand, and apply ourselves to the perfect will of God."

Some deeper considerations:

• The Greek word translated "conformed" only appears here and in I Peter 1:14 (...not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in ignorance.)

• The word for "world" is not the commonly known "kosmos" but is "aion" which means "age."

  • Literally, then, we are commanded not to dress like or fashion ourselves like the age or culture that we live in.

• "Transformed" is the word from which we get "metamorphosis."

• To renew the mind is, truly, a work that only God can do but we are commanded to yield ourselves to this work.

  • We are made new creatures in Christ (II Corinthians 5:17)

  • This word for "renew" appears also in Titus 3:5 - "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost."

  • The renewing is done by the Holy Ghost who also gave us the Scriptures (II Timothy 3:16)

• Practically speaking, we will become like what we expose ourselves to. If we consume the things of the world then we will look like the world. If we consume spiritual things, we will foster the work of the Spirit in renewing our minds.

The only way to know and test the wondrous will of God is by yielding our minds to the teachings of the Spirit in the Holy Scriptures.
